Astro Alert - New Moon In Cancer

As the Moon is right between the Earth and the Sun, it appears to unite with Sol on our sky. This moment can be a paradox: as the Moon conjuncts the Sun, we could say that a maximum of light and awareness is poured into our conscience, but if we look at the sky, the Moon appears dark and all things are imbued with an unsettling kind of anticipation.

It’s the beginning of a new phase, a fresh creative impulse that can offer bright solutions to the problems of the previous cycle. However, before things are put into motion, the New Moon moment offers a space of stillness, a white page where anything could happen.

What is the New Moon Optimal For?

The New Moon is all about planting new seeds of intention and kicking starting new habits in your life. The keyword for this moon phase is starting. Sometimes starting happens in your mind and other times it means getting out there and starting some new.

It can be difficult for those of us who like to be in charge because New Moons are times of uncertainty when it’s best to reflect and to set our intentions for the future more than to take decisive action. The nature of these intentions is best shown by the sign and the house of the Sun-Moon conjunction. Marrying personal will with the underlying currents of the Universe shows its results six months later, when a Full Moon shines in the same sign, revealing what has and what hasn’t come to fruition.

July 20 - New Moon in Cancer

This summer’s second Cancer New Moon means serious business! Taking place in the last degrees of this home-loving sign, the New Moon wraps up the past two years- a time of returning to our roots and to our inner child- and transforms it into a new beginning in the area of family, home, emotion and intuition. Once again, we’re called to get cozy in our own skin, finding what feels safe and what helps us feel whole.

The New Moon is supported by dreamy Neptune in Pisces, making it a great time for meditation, relaxation, and art. With so much water energy in the equation, we’re supported to open up to life and to flow with our intuition and gentleness, seeking community and connection.

At the same time, powerful oppositions from retrograde Jupiter, Saturn, and Pluto in Capricorn cast revealing shadows on this New Moon. It’s a moment when the extremes of the past years come into sharp focus: acceptance versus judgment, following our emotions versus being led by reason, femininity versus patriarchal structures. We can see how neither option is good or bad, but damage can be caused by an overdose of either Cancer (soft, malleable, gentle) or Capricorn (rigid, determined, stern) energy.

If we tend to express one of these signs more than the other, this New Moon could show us the other side of the coin in the shape of people or experiences who pull us- often through tension- towards a balance point. For example, if you have strong Cancer energy in your chart and you feel judged, invalidated, or pressured by someone in a position of authority, it could be a message to set firmer boundaries. If you’re a Capricorn kind of person and you feel like others are demanding too much from you, it could be a message to nurture yourself more before giving back.

The Sun/Moon-Saturn opposition is the strongest aspect that this New Moon forms. If Cancer is our inner child, the one who needs love and understanding, Saturn is the father, the part of us who is industrious and achievement-oriented. One of the challenges of this Moon is to find harmony between these two (apparently very different) parts of us. We could think of how self-discipline is a kind of self-care as well, or perhaps the other way around: self-care makes us more productive in the long run.

The New Moon’s opposition to Jupiter will heighten our emotions, making it paramount to take some time for rest and self-care, while the opposition with Pluto is likely to stir some past wounds and to trigger emotional transformation. This cosmic moment is a new beginning, but it’s connected to the past and to what we need to let go to reach a new level of growth.

On this New Moon, let’s check in with our emotions and ask ourselves what we really need, beyond what society has been asking from us up to this point.

Let’s set our intentions while allowing ourselves to receive, to connect and to let go, finding openness in the face of circumstances that can seem to limit, but that ultimately help us reunite our inner child with our inner father, our needs with our values. If you have planets or important points around the 28th degree of Aries, Cancer, Libra, or Capricorn, you’ll be feeling this New Moon more intensely than the rest of us.

New Moon In Cancer Ritual

During this new moon we’ll be trying to set intentions for inner balance and harmony, so that we can enhance our energy and invest it into creating our own damn magic. We’ll do that by creating a crystal grid and activate it with a piece of Selenite. We will be using Black Tourmaline as energy balancers, sunstone as a focus point and three Pyrite chunks as energy enhancers. Here is how to do it:

  • Lay down all your tools in front of you and cleanse then with sage to remove negative vibes.

  • Clear our some space on your altar or sacred space to set up your crystal grid.

  • Then, take a few deep breaths and calm yourself down. Hold your goal and purpose for the following month in your mind clearly. You can also write it down on a small piece of paper to enhance the intention.

  • Now, hold your piece of Sunstone and take a few deep breaths to focus on your goal. Take deep breaths and let the Sunstone soak up your intentions. Then place it in the middle.

  • Now place the Black Tourmaline pieces around the sunstone, and place pyrite between the Black Tourmaline. Take a few deep breaths.

  • Now take your piece of Selenite, and from the outermost crystal on the position of 12pm draw a vertical line towards the center with your Selenite, then repeat the same movement with every crystal next to it, in a clockwise direction. When you get to the starting position, place the Selenite on top of the sunstone in the center, and take a few deep breaths and focus on visualizing your goal.

  • Place the piece with your intention below the Sunstone, and say a little prayer to thank the Universe for the beautiful energy is sending you.
