Wine and the zodiac have been around for millennia.

If you were a wine based on your zodiac sign, which wine would you be? I’m breaking down the zodiac wheel and comparing both traits of wine and sun signs to see which match best.

Aries and Petite Sirah

Aries Traits

March 21 - April 19 |  Fire | The Ram

Strength: bold, honest, determined, confident.

Weakness: aggressive, impulsive, moody, impatient.

As the first sign of the zodiac, Aries loves to lead the way for the other signs. They are extremely hard working - in both their career and social life. An Aries is fearless to start a new opportunity, knowing that they’re paving the way for a new adventure.

As a fire sign, Aries tend to have their emotions on a high at all times though they don’t always look like it. As a friend or lover, they are fun to be around and fiercely loyal. However, they don’t really need anyone who isn’t adding to their bounty. #NoNewFriends but also #ByeFelicia.

Petite Sirah Profile

Style: Full Body, Dry, High Tannin, High Alcohol,

Flavors: Sugar Plum, Blueberry, Dark Chocolate, Black Pepper, Black Tea

The Petite Sirah is popular for its bold, fruity flavors in spite of its dark red color. It’s a common California Wine that derives from a rare French grape named “Peloursin”, or as the French would say, “Durif”.

Compatibility

The higher the tannins the healthier the wine, and Petite Sirah is chuck full of aggressive tannins. This isn’t far off from Aries as they are both aggressive within their category. Within all its sweet and bitter flavors, Petite Sirah is good for your health as the bitterness keeps tannins high.

An Aries’ brutal honesty may leave a sour taste in your mouth, however, tough love is their M.O.  It’s Aries bold nature is what earns them respect, just like a Petite Sirah wine.

Taurus and Cabernet Sauvignon

Taurus Traits

April 20 - May 20 | Earth | The Bull

Strength: loyal, dependable, patient, grounded.

Weakness: possessive, aggressive, uncompromising.

Tauruses love to reap rewards. Earth signs all have this common trait among them. They are dependable and hardworking, not so much because they love to do so, but more because they know what they’ll earn. This is where their patience is everlasting and is what makes them great partners, both in work and life.

A Taurus can be romantic to the point of being sentimental, which feeds both their sensuality and loyalty. They can definitely be aggressive and quick to lash out when they feel threatened in something they thought was secure. But at the grain of it all, they are chilling like a nice villain.

Cabernet Sauvignon Profile

Style: Full Body, Dry, High Tannin, High Alcohol

Flavors: Black Cherry, Black Currant, Baking Spices, Cedar

Cabernet Sauvignon is a full-bodied red wine and one of the safest choices when you go out to eat. The California wine is easy to pair with red meats, giving it a rich flavor pallet. What you probably didn’t know is that this red wine pairs best with dark chocolate.

Compatibility

Much like Taurus, Cabernet Sauvignon is a sensual red wine that you learn to love and trust. The proof is in the wine’s flavor notes which bring out the sexy undertones of Cabernet Sauvignon. Both the sign and wine have a range of earthy flavors with a strong body and dry style.

Gemini and Bordeaux Blend

Gemini Traits

May 21 - June 20 | Air | The Twins

Strength: intellectual, versatile, social, cheerful.

Weakness: gossipy, indecisive, superficial, anxious.

If any sign gets a bad rap, it’s definitely Geminis. With their symbol being twins, they have a two-faced stigma. The reality is that Geminis are smart enough to adapt to each environment they are in. Like their Air element, they flow into different situations and behave accordingly.

They are total chatterboxes who take the conversation into deep ends. It’s hard to not enjoy a Gemini’s company, and almost impossible to not learn something from them.

Bordeaux Blend Profile

Style: Full Body, High Tannin, High Alcohol, Medium Acidity, Dry

Flavors: Black Currant, Black Cherry, Graphite, Chocolate, Dried Herbs

A Bordeaux Blend is made up mostly from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Additionally, it includes other grapes harvested in the same region of France. Together it makes a sweet, dark red blend perfect for a lightly seasoned steak dinner.

Compatibility

Is it any wonder that I chose a Blend for the Twins? Much like Bordeaux Blend is mixed well to fit in with most red meats, Geminis have their own mix of Yin and Yang. The caveat with Geminis is that it’s impossible to predict with Twin they’ll today. In turn, Bordeaux Blends vary in flavor strengths - either sweet or citrusy.

Cancer and Riesling

Cancer Traits

June 21 - July 22 | Water | The Crab

Strength: kind, creative, family oriented, tough

Weakness: hot-headed, immature, moody, overthinkers, emotional

Cancer signs feel things deeply, as all water signs do. In this case, the emotions are tied to love more than any other circumstance. As the crab from the Zodiac, Cancers have a tough exterior and will be strong when they need to be - especially for the family.

Riesling Profile

Style: Light Body, Little Tannins, High Acidity, Off-Dry, Low Alcohol

Flavor: Lime, Green Apple, Beeswax, Jasmine, Petrol

Rieslings were made into table wines due to their sweet and sour wines with a higher acidity making it perfect for either desserts or appetizers. This aromatic white wine began to be produced in Germany, making it stand out from the French and California wine crowds.

Compatibility

Cancers and Riesling are both moody in a sense. While Cancer signs have a sweet nature, they can be agitated easily by others and even become sad over the world’s hardships. Meanwhile, Riesling can either be very sweet or bone dry. The sweetness of a Reisling can be controlled during the fermentation process, it’s more up to the maker and not on the grape itself.

Leo and Champagne

Leo Traits

July 23 - August 22 | Fire | The Lion

Strength: ambitious, loyal, generous, enthusiastic, leader.

Weakness: egoistic, lazy, stubborn, arrogant.

Leos’ main priority is being noticed or recognized. Out of all the Fire signs, Leos yearn to make an impression and they do a great job in doing so. Their personality is so magnetic and powerful that one cannot ignore a Leo. Seriously, they might die.

Leos reading this are probably saying, “No!” But everyone has a love language, and there’s nothing wrong with Words of Affirmation being Leo’s. In fact, all Fire signs speak in Words of Affirmation. This fact does not detract from Leo’s warm heart and eagerness to do well in everything they set out to do.

Champagne Profile

Style: Light Body, High Acidity, Intensely Dry

Flavors: Citrus, Peach, White Cherry, Almond, Toasty

Dom Perignon produced the first version of sparkling Champagne back in the late 1600s, after that it was game over. Champagne has been a sparkling wine since then with deep flavors that pair great with seafood and crunchy appetizers.

Compatibility

“Every Champagne is a sparkling wine, but not all sparkling wines can be Champagne”. The same can be - and probably will be - said about Leos. As loyal as Leos come, if Leos are not treated with the attention they need, they will move on. In comparison, when Champagne is left unattended, it can’t help but go flat.

Even though Champagne is very dry, Leos are different. The Sun Sign loves to be adored and has no problem admiring in return. When it comes to having a good time or celebrating, however, both Leos and Champagne make perfect companions.

Virgo and Chardonnay

Virgo Traits

August 23 - September 22 | Earth | The Maiden

Strength: strong, hardworking, observant, analytical, sophisticated

Weakness: intense, dominating, perfectionist, shy.

Virgos are one of the most sophisticated of Zodiac signs on the wheel. They deliver clean work without complaint, along with clean truths without offense. Their traits make Virgos great friends as they can lend clear advice and a helping hand.

Virgos have a very practical way of looking at life, which includes working towards the big picture. Their plans are with a purpose, whether it’s a workout routine or a vacation. Virgos don’t mind the work they have to put in as they realize the importance of the little things.

Chardonnay Notes

Style: Full Body, Dry

Flavors: Yellow Apple, Starfruit, Pineapple, Vanilla, Butter

Chardonnay is a rich white wine that began to be harvested in large quantities in the Burgundy region of France. The variety of flavors a Chardonnay offers is not limited to the list above. When fermented and aged in oak, it develops spicy - almost like bourbon - notes.

Compatibility

Both Virgos and Chardonnay are hardworking. It doesn’t take a lot of steps to make this elegant wine, but it does take dedication, much like the dedication Virgos put into their craft. Not to mention how sophisticate Virgos are in the way to talk, work, and carry themselves.

We love Chardonnay for their rich flavor and smooth finish, as we love Virgos for their ability to compliment all the other signs.

Libra and Moscato

Libra Traits

September 23 - October 21 | Air | The Scales

Strength: fair, charming, diplomatic, easy going, imaginative.

Weakness: indecisive, bad temper, people pleasers, overthinker.

Libras can feel like they’re carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders. They spend time worrying more about others more than themselves. Libras constantly analyze how others treat them, or should they be kinder or harsher. Their constant back and forth is what keeps them so indecisive.

Moscato Profile

Style: Light Body, Low Alcohol, Sweet, Low Acidity

Flavors: Meyer Lemon, Mandarin Orange, Pear, Orange Blossom, Honeysuckle

Moscatos are sweet white wines, often paired with fruity desserts. Originating from the Muscat Grape, Moscato is an Italian wine. The wine can be duplicated and made into several ways depending on which Muscat grape is used and how. Different Moscato styles include Bubbly, Still, Pink, Red, or Dessert Muscato.

Compatibility

Both Moscato and Libra are liked by most everybody. While being aromatic and sweet, Moscatos are balanced with the acidity, bubbles, and mineral finish. Libras are balance most with a partner, yet they love fairness all around including at work and friendships.

As indecisive as Libras are, what we see is what we get. They don’t change for anyone because to do so, would not be fair to them. A Muscat grape can fit into any type of Moscato, but the wine will always stay true to their flavor and body, no matter the color.

Scorpio and Merlot

Scorpio Traits

October 22 - November 21 | Water | The Scorpion

Positive: loyal, passionate, determined, intuitive, empathetic.

Negative: secretive, intense, emotional, jealous, flirtatious.

Scorpios are anything but easy going. They love to get to know others and don’t do small talk. It’s a waste of time for them to go around the bush.  A Scorpio’s inquisitive nature is what makes them so intense. Their keen sense of intuition helps them know when a person is lying or being shady.

Merlot Profile

Style: Full Body, Extra Dry, High Tannin, Medium Acidity, High Alcohol

Flavors: Cherry, Plum, Chocolate, Bay Leaf, Vanilla

Merlot has vibrant black cherry flavors making it stand out in the crown, yet offering so much more. Along with their healthy tannins and chocolatey finish, Merlot is definitely a crowd favorite. Due to its complimenting flavors, Merlot can mix well with other full body wines like Cabernet Sauvignon.

Compatibility

Scorpio concerns itself with beginnings and endings, all of which are important to them and far from scary.  Merlot starts bitter (or intense, if you will) with sweet tones to finished it off. If you don’t pay attention, you’ll miss it. Appreciating a Merlot can be learned in the same way we can appreciate a Scorpio.

Scorpio’s sweetness comes through with their loyalty. Scorpios will take their secrets to the grave along with yours. Did you kill someone? - Scorpios won’t tell. This type of loyalty, along with their protective nature, is what makes them great in friendships and love.

Sagittarius and Malbec

Sagittarius Traits

November 22 - December 21 | Fire | The Archer

Strength: idealistic, adventurous, persistent, optimistic, romantic.

Weakness: competitive, impulsive, impatient, overachiever, blunt.

A Sagittarius is known to be positive and outgoing - a social butterfly. They seek out as much knowledge about life as they can find. Their curiosity about philosophy, religion, and love is what helps satisfy their personal journey - all the while yearning to stay free and light, without burdens.

Malbec Notes

Style: Full Body, Dry, Low Acidity, Low Tannin, High Alcohol

Flavors: Red Plum, Blackberry, Vanilla, Tobacco, Cocoa

Malbec is found in Argentina, but comes from France, as many other wines do. Malbec is a deep, sweet red wine that’s bound to leave you wanting more. Similar to Merlot, it’s cocoa tones give the wine a chocolatey finish with rich flavors all around.

Compatibility

As a black-fruited, and aggressive oak usages, Malbec is a fun and strong wine. Unlike other wines, their finish does not last. The same could be said about a Sagittarius, but not in a bad way. Sagittariuses are very good at starting new ventures without looking back at how their last ended.

Capricorn and Sauvignon Blanc

Capricorn Traits

December 22 - January 19 | Earth | The Goat

Strength: responsible, disciplined, ambitious, practical.

Weakness: inability to be wrong, pessimistic, unforgiving.

As their name suggests, Capricorns will tell you they are the Greatest Of All Time (G.O.A.T.). Capricorns are determined signs who don’t need to be asked to do what they are responsible for. They also set practical expectations, knowing they’re success will take time, but will come with rich rewards. That’s an Earth sign for you.

Sauvignon Blanc Profile

Style: Light Body, Dry, Low Alcohol, Low Tannin, High Acidity

Flavors: Gooseberry, Honeydew Melon, Grapefruit, White Peach, Passion Fruit

Sauvignon Blanc is unmistakable. Compared to other rich white wines (like Chardonnay), this wine is full of acidity and herbal flavors. When it comes to food, this wine is a perfect match for all vegetarians dishes or even lightly roasted chicken.

Compatibility

Much like Sauvignon Blanc, Capricorns are dry with their emotions. This is due to Capricorn’s diligent personality and view of the world. Sauvignon Blanc is one part fruits and one part earthy notes - matching Capricorn’s element perfectly.

Aquarius and Pinot Noir

Aquarius Traits

January 20 - February 18 | Air | The Water Bearer

Strength: humanitarian, intelligent, independent, loyal, visionaries.

Weakness: detached, extremist, aloof, stubborn, unpredictable.

Aquarius is the Water Bearer of the Zodiac wheel which means they shower us with their knowledge and ideas as a Water Bearer showers people with their water. The Air sign looks to make a better world, not only by encouraging others to do better but by creating ways to become better.

Pinot Noir Profile

Style: Light Body, Dry, High Acidity, Low Tannins

Flavors: Cherry, Raspberry, Hibiscus, Mushroom, Vanilla

Pinot Noir is a favorable wine around the world. The light-red wine can be paired with an array of foods due to their style and its smooth finish. A bottle of Pinot Noir can be aged up to 10 or more years to enrich the flavors making it all the more satisfying in taste and color.

Compatibility

Pinot Noir and Aquarians are both dry to begin with, but finish smooth. While Pinot Noir tends to be on the sweeter end, their light body allows you to not get overwhelmed. Aquarians enjoy flirting and being playful, but when they start looking, they play for keeps. As the sun sign is progressive, Pinot Noir is one of those wines that can be made better the longer they age.

Pisces and Rosé

Pisces Traits

February 19 - March 20 | Water | The Fish

Strength: artistic, compassionate, intuitive, gentle.

Weakness: Fearful, too trusting, head in the clouds, victimizes.

As the last sign on the Zodiac wheel, Pisces encompasses many of the traits of all the others. Their symbol is usually a pair of fish swimming alongside, to reflect how Pisces will go with the flow. As selfless, focused and easy going as they are, they like to keep all of that to themselves. A lot of the times, a Pisces’ kind heart will be taken for granted, so they like to protect it.

Pisces feel everything as it is in their empathetic nature. They somehow end up carrying their burden along with the burdens of others. Though they are sensitive, they are far from pushovers. A Pisces will never have a problem standing their ground.

Rosé Notes

Style: Light Body, Dry, Low Tannin

Common Flavors: Lime, Cherry, Watermelon, Strawberry, Celery, Pepper

Rosé does not come from a particular grape itself, rather, it’s a variety of other grapes used to make fuller bodied wines. Rosé wine grapes include, but are not limited to Pinot Noir, Syrah, Sangiovese, and Grenaché.

Compatibility

Just like a Pisces, Rosé can be composed of a variety of flavors that come from other wines. Though mixing red and white wine to make Rosé is prohibited in many places, Champagne, France is not one of them. Ergo, the Rosé Champagne we all know and love. Just like with hanging out with a Pisces, any Rosé you chose, it is still a fun and unique wine to enjoy.
